Let's dive into two easy-to-implement scavenger hunts for spring that have been tested and approved by my own family!

Supplies Needed:
- Printed nature scavenger hunt checklist (download below)
- Clipboard (this one is my favorite! There is storage to keep your crayon, magnifying glass, etc!) or hard surface for writing
- Pencil or crayon for checking off items
- Optional: magnifying glass for closer observation
- Optional: small collection bag or bucket
How to Use:

- Explain to your child that they'll be looking for the items pictured
- Head outdoors to a park, trail, or even your backyard

2. Rainbow Nature Scavenger Hunt
This rainbow nature scavenger hunt is such a fun and budget-friendly activity for younger children who are working on color recognition, and it's adaptable for older kids too! This hunt uses a simple cardboard board with clothespins to create a hands-on color matching experience. Be sure to review the Important Safety Note below!
Supplies Needed:
- Large piece of cardboard (should be a size that your child can hold comfortably)
- Sharpie or black marker
- Crayons or markers to color each section
- 6-7 wooden clothespins
How to Create:
- Cut your cardboard into a rectangle that's easy for your child to hold
- Using a ruler and Sharpie, draw horizontal lines to divide the cardboard into 6-7 equal sections
- Label each section with a color name (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Pink)
- Color each section with the corresponding color
- Attach a clothespin to the edge of each colored section
How to Play:
- Take your color board and clothespins outside
- Challenge your child to find something in nature that matches each color
- When they find an item, they can clip it to their board with the corresponding clothespin
- For items that can't be picked (like a bird or large plant), draw a photo!
Important Safety Note: Always supervise children during this activity and teach them to respect nature and property boundaries. Only collect items from your own yard, public spaces where collecting is permitted, or items that have already fallen naturally (like leaves or petals). Never pick living plants or flowers without permission, especially from neighbors' yards or protected areas, or items that may cause irritiation. When in doubt, take a photo or draw a picture instead of collecting the item.
This activity is so wonderfully versatile and can be adapted based on your child's age and interests. For toddlers, focus on the basic color matching. For older children, add challenges like finding items with different textures or shapes within each color category.
